Going to garage, rummage, and yard sales is a wonderful way to save money and recycle at the same time. It’s also a fun something to do on a weekend morning. But be warned… it is addictive, and if you aren’t careful, you might end up with a house so full, YOU need to have a sale of your own!
Here are a few suggestions to help you with your bargain hunting endeavors:
- Choose sales in good neighborhoods. The items being sold are usually of a higher quality and are more likely to be gently used.
- Keep a list of the items you would really like to find. You’ll know what you want and it will help you resist the temptation of “but it’s too good to pass up”.
- Don’t be afraid to negotiate! Making money is only one of the goals of the person holding the sale. The other is to get rid of everything! Many times people will come down in price just to get it gone.
- Do be nice about it. That old honey/vinegar adage is still passed along for a reason. Not only that, but some people will be insulted by ridiculously low offers and don’t mind outright donating it to a thrift/charity shop at the end of the day. Of course, if they like honey, they might just donate to YOU!
